One of the core functions of the coordination platform is to “inform HC/HCT’s strategic decisions”, by providing them a clear analysis and prioritization of WASH humanitarian needs. To achieve this function, the coordination platform should:
Understand the contribution of WASH sector to the intersectoral needs assessment process. Clusters/sectors assessment processes are guided by and must contribute to the response’s intersectoral assessment process, usually called Humanitarian Needs Overview in protracted / slow emergency, or Flash Appeal in sudden on-set crisis.
Set up an assessment strategy to define the information needs and make necessary arrangements to gather required data
Developcore indicators to harmonize the way WASH assessment data is collected and make the link with the response monitoring system
Implement asecondary data review (SDR) to collate and consolidate data collected by actors such as national governments, development organizations or other clusters.
Coordinate or lead WASH primary data collection and analyses to address gaps identified by the SDR through multi-sectorial or WASH-specific assessments, implemented by assessment-specialized organizations or WASH partners
Estimate WASH People in Need (PIN) and implement a WASH severity mapping. The data analysis must lead to an estimation of WASH PIN figures and a WASH severity mapping, to identify and prioritize the people in need of WASH support.

Standard WASH indicators have been agreed by cluster/sector partners and have been integrated into various multi-sector data collection initiatives (DTM, CCCM tracking, SMART Surveys).
There is a cluster/sector mechanism or protocol in place to collect assessment data from partners.
Analysis highlighting geographic or programmatic gaps is regularly updated, easily accessible, and discussed during coordination meetings.
